In the Forests of the Night by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes became the first book of A Den of Shadows series. Copyrighted in 1999 and published by Laurel-Leaf, a division of Random House Inc., the book consists of 147 seven pages and includes an excerpt from her book Persistence of Memory. The style of story appears in first person.  The book has some explicit references to death and torture therefore considering it not only fantasy but horror. In the Forests of the Night also is categorized under adult and young adult fiction. The book is a vampiratic, fantasy story of a three hundred year old vampire named Risika, which flashes back to the time she was forced to become a vampire. While remembering the past, Risika also goes though troubles with hunting in territories which do not belong to her as well as gaining the respect she believes she deserves.

In 1701 Rachel (Risika) lives with her brother Alexander, sister Lynette and father Peter in Massachusetts. Alexander discovers he has an odd ability, which frightens him into thinking he automatically signed the devil’s book. A strange man named Aubrey Karew shows up at their door and gives Rachel a black rose. Aubrey, a vampire, and his not so lovely assistant, Ather, kills her humanity and makes her a vampire too. In present time, Aubrey kills a tiger in the zoo, which Risika created a bond with. This causes her to seek revenge even though she fears him and his power.

When reading the book, it flows very easily and smoothly. Contains no static characters for both Risika and Aubrey change throughout the novel.  The tone of the book is suspenseful yet sophisticated, giving one an I can’t tear myself away feeling without the usual wham-bam-in-your-face kind of suspense. I found Amelia Atwater-Rhodes’s book very addicting and just seeing the book sit there while I tried to do my homework made my fingers itch to start reading again. Once you start it becomes nearly impossible to stop.
